Aren't they adorable? We ended up being able to donate 19 hats to both the newborn nursery and ISCU (Infant Special Care Unit). A big thank you to everyone who contributed!

Butterfly Hat
Recently, I discovered the Butterfly Hat pattern. Isn't the texture of the hat so much fun? It looks kind of lumpy and bumpy when not worn, but I'm kind of a fan of textures. Will definitely try it out on some other yarns.
If you want to make a hat for a preemie or newborn, I would recommend casting on 40 stitches for preemie, and 50 or 60 stitches for newborns if you're using worsted weight yarn. Since the pattern is based on repeats of 10, you'll just have less repeats than the original pattern has.
I used a sport weight yarn (Meadow) for mine, cast-on was 80 stitches.
A tip: make sure there is some slack in the working yarn after slipping the 5 stitches. Later on in rows above, you will be picking up these strands of yarn. You will have to experiment to get the right tension.
Let me know if you have any questions about the pattern! Post questions in the comment section, or you can e-mail NettersKnitters@gmail.com

Knit/Crochet a Heart Shape
***EDIT: We received a Thank you card from the nursery!
---
Hello All!
I hope you enjoyed your ice vacation and are working hard on your Valentine's hats! Remember: the hats are due this Friday (2/11).
In case you would like some more inspiration, here are some quick and fun patterns for a knitted heart and a crochet heart.
The knitted heart pattern is also good for practicing different increase and decrease techniques. The links on the page show you how to do each one.
You can just add these hearts to your hats as decoration.
So...if you would like to make a Valentine's hat, but the one you are currently working on isn't that festive, just slap a heart on it and voila, instant Valentine's hat!
Good luck knitting, and see you Friday!

Netter's Knitters Friday Knit Circle is CANCELLED
Due to estimated weather conditions, our knit circle will be cancelled this Friday, February 4, 2011.
The good thing about knitting is that you can knit anywhere, rain or shine (as long as you're not knitting outdoors in the rain, that would be a sight). So happy knitting this weekend everyone, and stay warm!
